The Best Hardware for the Best Estimating Software
The best construction estimating software helps you be more efficient and increases productivity. The hardware you chose to go with it should also mirror that efficiency and productivity.
Here is how to design the estimator’s ideal hardware setup.
Monitors
At the very least, you need two monitors—one to run your estimating software and another for viewing drawings and models. To fully optimize your efficiency, add a third—a vertical monitor.
Vertical monitors are good for reading a lot of text, working in large spreadsheets, and viewing pdfs.
Most monitors can be used vertically; however, they need the supporting stand to rotate it correctly.
So, what about your regular monitors? 25” to 34” or larger ultra-wide for viewing plans, doing takeoff, and running your estimating software. 1920x1080 resolution is considered full HD and should be plenty for viewing plans and takeoff.
Some estimators like curved monitors, but flat or curved is all preference.

Mouse
An often-overlooked tool for the productive estimator is a quality mouse. An estimator is performing tasks that others in the office are not. Tasks such as navigating and quantifying drawings, enumerating scope and cost, reviewing specs and bid sheets, and much more. And all this is orchestrated via the mouse. Common functions of a quality mouse for the efficient estimator are precise tracking, right-left-middle buttons, vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling, and additional thumb-side buttons for customized functionality.
The wireless and ergonomic Logitech MX Master 3 is hands down one of the best-rated mouses out there. With an “ultrafast” top scroll and a horizontal thumb scroll wheel, you can quickly and efficiently look at plans and large spreadsheets.
It also has seven programmable buttons so you can customize your repetitive tasks into a single click increasing your productivity and efficiency.
Keyboard
Good software has intelligently designed workflows that eliminate the need for macro keys. An ergonomic mechanical keyboard and number pad (part of keyboard or separate) are all a user should need with the best construction estimating software like the DESTINI suite of preconstruction software.
Automating as many manual tasks as possible helps you increase productivity and gives you time to focus on adding value to the project. These simple hardware upgrades can be game-changing for estimators.
